I have suffered from chronic back pain and right sciatica for more than 20 years. My back and leg pain got so severe that I even ended up having back surgery in 2005. This helped but to my despair the pain returned - shooting into my right leg and even causing my body to be off centre or crooked for a number of days.
In the last year or so, my chronic back pain seemed to be getting worse. It was starting to take over my life - it even spread to include headaches, pain between my shoulder blades and upper traps. My sleep was disturbed, I was tired and the pains were becoming intolerable. For treatment I had been to everyone there was – physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths & massage therapists. The treatments involved a whole range of things – massage, “hands on treatment” as well as a whole range of exercises. But in spite of all this, I was in agony most days and did not feel like I had any idea of how to get better.
So I sought the opinion of a Back Specialist in Sydney who referred me to a McKenzie Physiotherapist – Sandra McFaul. What I learnt from Sandra was specific exercises which have helped me to take control of the back pain rather than the back pain controlling me.
I have had 7 sessions with her – traveling from Berry, on the South Coast of NSW up to Sydney. The McKenzie Method of treatment has really helped. I still have good and bad days but I feel so much better for doing the “McKenzie exercises.” I am more in control and now have a better understanding of how my body works thanks to the McKenzie Method. I now know what I can do to help alleviate my back pain and how I can help myself to improve my condition.
I am currently exercising everyday and use the McKenzie Method and other strategies I learnt with Sandra with confidence. Despite being a back pain sufferer for more than 20 years, I have now learnt how to manage this thing and not expect a miraculous cure. It feels great to be more energetic and on the move again.
