I sustained a back injury in July 2000 and after having a MRI was diagnosed with fractures of my thoracic spine at the levels of 6, 7 and 8. I also had a slight prolapse at the T6. The soft tissue surrounding this area as well as the muscles was damaged causing much pain and discomfort.
From this point on, my life became a merry-go-round of trying to cope with working as a nurse, chronic pain and never ending visits to health professionals. During this period I was told by one Doctor the only place for me was the pain clinic and to stop looking for the answers. Sometimes I started to believe this was where I was headed.
I visited a physio which in most cases seemed to increase my pain and I never seemed to make any progress despite doing everything I was told. Massage gave me temporary relief and sometimes resulted in nerve pain from the treatment. I also found that after about 2 days the muscles became tight and painful again. The chiropractor and acupuncture gave me temporary relief however as the pain and muscle spasm returned I was force to take medication. These were not a solutions just band aid treatments for my painful symptoms. It is very hard to stay positive with chronic pain and I thought my life would just continue in this direction.
However, fortunately in June 2007, I was referred to Sandra McFaul a physiotherapist who practices the McKenzie Method of back treatment. From my first visit I felt confident that Sandra would be able to help me with her kind and professional manner. Everything was explained clearly and simply and I was given the power to help myself heal my back and end my chronic pain. I commenced with simple and effective half push-ups and backward bends and instructions and information for improving my posture. Anytime I had a problem, Sandra would discuss it on the phone with me and work out a solution; it really gave me confidence.
Week by week I continued to improve and even when I had a little set back there was always a way to find a solution with Sandra’s help. In total I had 10 physio sessions with her. I am now able to enjoy my life without chronic pain being my constant companion. Each day I walk for about an hour and swim doing laps in the local pool. My posture has improved and I feel confident again to take on any challenge that comes my way.
Thank you Sandra.
